Founder and artistic director of Poème Harmonique, Vincent Dumestre explores with his ensemble the vocal and instrumental repertoire of the 17th and early 18th centuries.
Surrounded by a troupe of faithful artists, he also strives to revive the baroque scenic arts, thus promoting the meeting of artistic disciplines in many of his projects.
Vincent Dumestre was born in May 1968. After studying Art History at the École du Louvre and classical guitar at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, he devoted himself to the lute, the baroque guitar and the Theorbe that he studied with Hopkinson Smith, Eugene Ferré, Rolf Lislevand, then joined various ensembles and orchestras (Ricercar Consort, The Simphony of the Marsh, The Great Stable and the King’s Chamber, The Baroque Music Center of Versailles …) , with whom he participated in many concerts and did about thirty recordings.
In 1998, he founded the Poème Harmonique – a musical ensemble specializing in the baroque repertoire – whose artistic orientation is designed and managed by him.The ensemble was immediately noticed, and the magazine Diapason elected Vincent Dumestre “the young talent of the year 1999”.
His artistic career is essentially linked with that of Poème Harmonique, he occupies a singular place on the international baroque scene: insatiable pioneer of unpublished works of the opera (Caligula, Egisto, Cadmus & Hermione …), sacred music (Lamentations of Cavalieri, Great Motets of Lalande …) and chamber music (Briceno, Belli, Tessier …). He is also, from the creation of his Bourgeois Gentilhomme in 2004, one of the few musicians directing a company a group directly involved in the production of scenic shows of large dimensions, thus contributing to a new perception of the relationship between music and theater. This artistic approach provokes a huge craze from both critics and the public.
In addition to developing his activity as a conductor, he continues to participate as an instrumentalist with his singers and musicians in the chamber music programs of the ensemble. In recent years, the fame of Vincent Dumestre and Poème Harmonique has experienced a spectacular development, the whole is now hosted by the most prestigious programmers on all continents (Philharmonie de Paris, Opéra Comique, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Opéra Royal Palace of Versailles, Wiener Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Utrecht Festival, Kölner Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall of London, BBC Proms, Beijing National Center for Performing Arts, Tokyo Oji Hall, Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg, Columbia University of New York…).
Supported by the Normandy Region for the activities of Poème Harmonique, Vincent Dumestre is also the artistic director of Les Saisons Baroques: a series of concerts and cultural events in Rouen, including an international competition of baroque music, programmed in the historical setting of the Chapelle Corneille, and artistic director of the Haut Jura Festival. In 2017, he was entrusted with the programming of the 14th edition of the Misteria Paschalia Festival in Krakow. In 2004, the Minister of Culture appointed Vincent Dumestre “Knight of Arts and Letters”, and in 2009 “Knight of the National Order of Merit”.
