François Cheval

François Cheval was born in 1954, trained in history and ethnology, he is a museum curator since
1982, successively in the Jura and Reunion. From 1996 to 2016, he was the director of Nicéphore-
Niépce Museum in Chalon-sur- Saône, where he undertook the task to rid photography of its
presuppositions and to present the originality of the photographic through a renewed museography
and discourse. He has notably taken the initiative of remarkable retrospectives and defends a
demanding young photography. Curator of over one hundred exhibitions, François Cheval endeavors
to challenge in each of them the certainties of the history of photography, by creating moments of
discovery, pleasure, interrogation and surprise.
