Dominique Vellard

Since 1979, Dominique Vellard has inspired and guided the destinies of Ensemble Gilles Binchois: More than 35 years of researches and concerts which have developed the creation of some essential recordings in the domain of medieval and renaissance music.

His significant role in spawning and flourishing the “école française” of medieval music, especially his unique interpretations for the Gregorian repertoire, has given him a medievalist image. His interest towards the other eras of the ancient music is unwavering. For him, altering these repertoires ranging from the 10th century to the 17th century is like revitalizing his enthusiasm at all times.

For the past 20 years, Dominique Vellard has developed the projects in collaboration with the traditional Indian, Spanish, British, Moroccan and Iranian musicians. He also devotes a part of his time for composition using his own musical and spiritual training, like in his experience and his interest for monody and polyphony of oral tradition.

Since 1982, he serves as the  Professor of interpretation of medieval and renaissance repertoires at “la Schola Cantorium de Bâle”, where students from different parts of the world  come together to follow his courses and where several  generations of interpreters have drawn constituent elements of their style and their knowledge base.

Creative director of the festival “Rencontres Internationales du Thoronet” for 27 years, he has created a Summer academy where he welcomes the students and young professionals for 8 days sessions, offering them the possibility to discover the repertoires and to deepen their knowledge and also for their musical practice ranging from Middle age to the 17th century, devoting each session to a specific period and repertoire.

Dominique Vellard has more than 50 discs to his credit of which about 40 songs are in his mind for l’Ensemble Gilles Binchois. He has been recently awarded “Chevalier de la Légion d”Honneur”.
